Metabolic network destruction: Relating topology to robustness
نویسندگان
چکیده
Biological networks exhibit intriguing topological properties such as small-worldness. In this paper, we investigate whether the topology of a particular type of biological network, ametabolic network, is related to its robustness.Wedo so byperturbing ametabolic system in silico, one reaction at a time and studying the correlations between growth, as predicted by flux balance analysis, and a number of topological metrics, as computed from three network representations of the metabolic system. We find that a small number of metrics correlate with growth and that only one of the network representations stands out in terms of correlated metrics. The most correlated metrics point to the importance of hub nodes in this network, so-called ‘‘currency metabolites’’. Since they are responsible for interconnecting distant functional modules in the network, they are important points in the network for predicting if reaction removal affects growth. A second set of correlations in contrast is related to ‘‘loner’’ nodes that uniquely connect important pathways and thus correspond to essential steps in metabolism. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Network Criticality Analysis for Finite Sized Wireless Sensor Networks
The topology of a sensor network changes very frequently due to node failures because of power constraints or physical destruction. Robustness to topology changes is one of the important design factors of wireless sensor networks which makes them suitable to military, communications, health and surveillance applications. Network criticality is a measure which capture the properties of network r...
متن کاملSimulating Network Robustness: Two Perspectives on Reality
Two important recent trends in military and civilian communications have been the increasing tendency to base operations around an internal network, and the increasing threats to communications infrastructure. In the civilian sphere, the threat is from terrorist attacks, while in the military sphere this comes from the increasing tendency to view communications networks as high-value targets. T...
متن کاملUsing the topology of metabolic networks to predict viability of mutant strains.
Understanding the relationships between the structure (topology) and function of biological networks is a central question of systems biology. The idea that topology is a major determinant of systems function has become an attractive and highly disputed hypothesis. Although structural analysis of interaction networks demonstrates a correlation between the topological properties of a node (prote...
متن کاملDuality in graphs and logical topology survivability in layered networks
Graphs provide natural and convenient representations of communication networks. Graph models and flow formulations have been extensively used in the study of a large number of issues relating to network analysis and design. Structural characteristics such as connectivity/fault survivability (a measure of robustness of networks when link or node failures occur) and diameter (a measure of delay ...
متن کاملStructural analyses of a hypothetical minimal metabolism.
By integrating data from comparative genomics and large-scale deletion studies, we previously proposed a minimal gene set comprising 206 protein-coding genes. To evaluate the consistency of the metabolism encoded by such a minimal genome, we have carried out a series of computational analyses. Firstly, the topology of the minimal metabolism was compared with that of the reconstructed networks f...
